Wendy Kawabata at TCM First Hawaiian Center
Wendy Kawabata (faculty) "Pull, Mark, Fold"
Exhibition at The Contemporary Museum at First Hawaiian Center / February 13 to May 1, 2009
Using materials such as piles of logs and recycled books Kawabata's evolving bodies of work explore the relationship between process, repetition, and material. "My process of making is closely related to both drawing and to the history of utilitarian feminine craft. Repetitive and meditative acts: wrapping, poking, folding, stacking, hooking, pulling - all make space for quiet, association, and attentiveness."
Wendy Kawabata has been an Assistant Professor of Painting and Drawing at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa since 2005. Her works have been exhibited in numerous gallery and museum exhibitions including Loyola University, Chicago, IL; Hera Gallery, Wakefield, RI; Rochester Contemporary Gallery, Rochester, NY; and Steps Gallery, Melbourne, Australia. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Massachusetts College of Art, and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of New Mexico.

Opening Saturday March 28, 7pm - 10pm
Using textures and abstractions photographed in China, Scott Groeniger is examining the present culture and lifestyle of the ancient cradle of Chinese civilization which is Shanxi Province and the current cultural and political cradle which is Beijing. Shanxi Province has a deep and rich cultural history that is thousands of years old. Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi Province, has recently emerged as a major industrial city, fueling the growth of China with much needed energy resources. Taiyuan City is a leader in terms of the world’s worst air quality which is mostly caused by emissions from coal burning electricity plants and steel production facilities. Additionally, Taiyuan has one of the highest ratios of actual to potential desert on earth and as a result, is very quietly running out of water. With a small population of 3.5 million, Taiyuan is on the verge of becoming one of China’s most hushed eco-disasters. Despite this rather grim future tense, Taiyuan continues to build and expand.
With the 2008 Olympics finally behind us, Beijing has emerged as a post-modern major international city in the global arena. Working with photographic images from both of these unique locations in China Groeniger is combining textures and surfaces which reflect everyday life in China with images gathered from the many important cultural, archeological and historical sites, temples, art museums, and ancient cities around Shanxi Province and Beijing. The entire body of images weave together images of fragments and pieces from the present and the past found in these two extraordinary, historically significant places in China. The entire body of work ultimately suggests a rich cultural past overlaid on a future which is both full of challenges and hope as China transitions into an international super power.

Intersections and Jaimey Hamilton
808 SceneZine interviews Jaimey Hamilton on Intersections
Hamilton, "Ultimately, I want Intersections to help people see the Honolulu art scene from an international perspective”, Hamilton said. She goes on to make a distinction between what’s happening on the global art circuit (with it’s epicenter in New York, and it’s media outlets dominated by Art Forum magazine), and what happens locally. She says that a lot of artists look to the international scene and gear their efforts toward finding an in, but that’s a paradigm that is not sustainable for localized art communities, and she sees the end of that hierarchical association of artists on the horizon. What’s more, she sees Honolulu as a scene that can be on the vanguard of a new, sustainable model in community-based art and culture. But that kind of transition requires that the local arts, music, and cultural communities take their ideas of Honolulu out of the shadow of the mainland and the international scenes, and begin to see Honolulu’s cultural momentum as an international phenomenon."
Hamilton also curated an international exhibition "Pan Pacific Nation" Contemporary Pacific Island art from the Cook Islands, Fiji, Hawaii, New Zealand, Nuie, Samoa and Tonga now showing at ARTS at Mark's Garage, March 2- 23rd, 2009. Artists: Maile Andrade (MFA alum), Leanne Lupelele Clayton, Noelle Kahanu, Leilani Kake, Lily Laita, Nanette Lela’ulu, Janet Lilo, Carol Pao, Siliga David Setoga, Ema Tavola, Angela Tiatia, Sopolemalama Filipe Tohi
