Photography collective The Analog Sunshine Recorders have a new show opening February 4, 2011 at Thirtyninehotel titled Slow Jams, The Pinhole Edition.

"The Analog Sunshine Recorders are a collective of photographers outfitted with homemade, low-tech, and DIY cameras. With our little boxes of air we record what we find on a spectrum of analog emulsion. We set out to explore, understand, and celebrate the world around us by seeing it through a camera that celebrates the photographic mediums historic foundations. In this selection of pinhole camera images we highlight film based photography and show the potential of simplicity."

Elizabeth R. Curtis MFA Thesis Exhibition: The Visitors

MFA student Elizabeth R. Curtis has her MFA thesis exhibition, The Visitors, opening on February 13, 2011 at the UH Commons Gallery.
The Visitors, is an examination of what it means to be a "visitor". It explores issues of identity, preservation, and globalism through photographic imagery. Subjects are portrayed in a manner that references formal Victorian portraiture conventions against the backdrop of three contemporary "sites"- The Honolulu Academy of Arts, The Battleship Missouri Memorial, and Waimea Bay Beach Park.
The Visitors opening reception is February 13, 2011 3-5 pm
The Visitors will be on display February 13 - February 25, 2011.

Featured in the group show are professor of 2-D Digital Imaging, Scott Groeniger, Lecturer Kirsten Rae Simonsen, Lecturer and MFA alumni Maya Portner, MFA students Megan Bent, and Sheri Lyles, undergraduate students from Reem Bassous' Intermediate Drawing, and undergraduate student Rex Vlcek.

Wendy Kawabata featured in group exhibition SUBstainability

Associate Professor in Drawing and Painting Wendy Kawabata has work in the group show SUBstainability at Gallery I & II, in the School of Art and Design at Texas State University.
SUBstainability examines the multiple ways that we are sustained emotionally, mentally, and bodily. Also in the exhibition are works by Felix Gonzalez Torres, Kiki Smith, and Louise Bourgeois.
SUBstainability opens January 20 and will be on display until March 1, 2011.

Allison Uttley Bianco solo exhibition at HPU Art Gallery

MFA alum Allison Uttley Bianco has a solo exhibition Go Ahead and Sink opening at the Hawaii Pacific University Art Gallery on January 23, 2011.
Go Ahead and Sink pictures unfortunate ships being swallowed up by the ocean. This exhibition deals with natural perils and their absurd relationship to personal nostalgia. Since the fragile vessels share names with family members and friends they become linked with memories and history. The drawings represent frozen moments just between floating and sinking where sinking always wins, but hope for floating still remains.
Opening reception: January 23 from 4-6 pm.

Intermediate Drawing 213 collaborative project to be shown at ARTS at Marks Garage

Students in Intermediate Drawing Alexander Aningat, Jillian Bennet, Thomas Blake, Jade Clark, Breanne DeMotta, Sarah Fischer, Momi Green, Ashley Huang, Toby Idian, Damon Kikkawa, Laura Konecne, Kenny Lui, Emi Nakamura, Levi Purdy, Rex Vlcek, and Amy Yamamoto, under the guidance of faculty member Reem Bassous, worked collaboratively on a mixed media piece SOMNOLENCE ADRIFT - HALFWAY FROM NOWHERE TO NOWHERE ELSE. It was selected for the exhibition Now Here from Nowhere: The Future History of Navigation at ARTS at Marks Garage.

Chris Rohrer: 2nd place in Honolulu Magazine's Photography Contest

BFA photography student Chris Rohrer received 2nd place in Honolulu Magazine's 2010 Photography Contest. His photograph, Under, was featured in Honolulu Magazine's December issue.

Design Workshop students launch website for architecture Department

Students UH Design Workshop created a new website design for the School of Architecture. The new website parallels the idea of getting all the information on a single sheet of paper and was created without the use of flash so that it will be accessible from all computers. In the spring of 2008, the Graphic Design Program initiated the UH Design Workshop—a special studio, run by advanced (BFA) graphic design students (with faculty supervision) and committed to providing high-quality graphic design work for non-profit organizations in Hawai‘i. Projects that the Design Workshop has undertaken include yearly planners for the UH Health Services and an annual report for the State of Hawai‘i Environmental Council. Currently the workshop is redesigning the visual identity of the UH School of Architecture and the visual identity of the Hawaii Nature Center (including logo, signage, print materials, and website). Although the studio is only two years old, all completed projects have already won local or national recognition including awards from the American Institute of Graphic Arts (Hawaii Chapter), the American Advertising Federation (Hawaii Chapter), and HOW Magazine, a national publication showcasing outstanding work in graphic design.
