Niho Kozuru showing in San Francisco

"Liquid Sunshine" by Niho Kozuru (MFA alum) is on view from December 26 – March 6, 2010 at 555 California Street, Bank of America/Concourse Gallery, San Francisco.

Kozuru also received a fellowship in the Sculpture/Installation category from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. 50 artists were selected from more than 1,200 applicants in multiple disciplines.

Chae Ho Lee

Assistant Professor of Graphic Design Chae Ho Lee is the designer of Farout_ Library_ Software a collection of poetry by Maged Zaher and Pam Brown, published by Tinfish Press. The design by Lee was also chosen to be featured in the art and design journal Creative Quarterly.

Roxanne Chasle

MFA student Roxanne Chasle received Best in Show in Mailed 2.0 annual postcard competition at Anton Art Center in Mount Clemens MI. Mailed 2.0 was exhibited from November 20th to December 20th.

Dieter Runge Opening at TCM

MFA Alumni Dieter Runge has an exhibition opening at The Contemporary Museum's Cafe Gallery this week. Dieter's exhibition: Rock N Roll Revelation will feature works on paper and leather.
Opening reception for Rock n Roll Revelation is Saturday December 19th 2:30-4:00pm. There will be live music by Ellis Bourbonnais, Dave Rohr, Stephen Niles, and Dieter Runge.
Rock n Roll Revelation is showing from December 15th to January 19th. TCM Cafe Gallery hours are Tuesday - Sunday 11:30 am to 2:30 pm.

Brian Lo Solo Exhibition

MFA student Brian Lo has his first solo exhibition in Hawaii opening Friday December 18th at Manifest. Brian Lo: Solo Exhibition will feature Lo's latest digital drawings and paintings. Manifest is located at 32 N. Hotel St, the opening reception is December 18th from 8 - 11 pm.

Harold Koda

Harold Koda [BFA and BA alumni] is currently the Curator In Charge of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. After graduating from UH Koda moved to NY and began interning at The Costume Institute he then went on to be the Exhibition Assistant to Diane Vreeland. In 1979 he left the Met to become the Associate Curator at FIT. He was at FIT for 11 years. First as Associate Curator of the Costume Collection then as Curator of Costume Collection and then as Director. While at FIT he started co-collaborating with Richard Martin on such shows as Fashion in Surrealism, Paper Clothes, East Village, and Jocks and Nerds. In 1993 he was brought to the Met to collaborate on more exhibitions with Martin under the title of Associate Curator of the Costume Institute. In 1997 he returned to school at Harvard receiving a Masters Degree in Landscape Architecture. He has co-authored 24 publications that have informed historical discourse, and has co-organized numerous acclaimed exhibitions. Koda also currently contributes to a Blog "At The Moment" which is part of the New York Times Style Magazine Online.

Shige Yamada

BA, BEd, and MFA alumni Shige Yamada was an educator at the College of Education from 1968- 1988. After leaving UH in 1988 Shige went on to become a full time artist. His bronze sculptures are landmarks at the Kahului Airport, UH Manoa, and the Hawaii Convention Center. He has recently had much success with his digital art, some of which was just on display at the Degrees of Distinction Alumni Invitational Exhibition.
His personal work is part of the collections at The Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington D.C., The Museum of Art and Design in New York, The Contemporary Museum in Honolulu, Honolulu Academy of Arts and Hawaii State Art Museum. This year Shige was the featured artist at the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce Commitment to Excellence Exhibition, and in 1993 he was selected as a Living Treasure of Hawaii by Honpa Hogwanji Mission of Hawaii.

Design Students Featured in Online Exhibition

Interisland Terminal is proud to present: Moving Histories: Type in Motion, a ground breaking flash animation online exhibition which is available for viewing on December 9th, 2009. Moving Histories depicts pivotal and dramatic moments in world history by graphic design students from the Digital Design Art 400 class taught by professor Chae Ho Lee. Visually and conceptually adventurous the exhibit features seven animations from these seven emerging designers: John Cruz, Daniel Park, Angelica Rabang, Michelle Saoit, Aki Takebayashi, Jimmy Tran, and Hiromi Zimmerman.
These designers explored complex and sometimes tragic events in history from Hiroshima to 9/11. " The designers were asked to use only text and a limited palette of colors in their designs. The important role and creative potential of typography in an online project should never be ignored. These projects are to be read and experienced." says Chae Ho Lee.
Wei Fang , Interisland Terminal's curator of Contemporary Art and Design comments " The relationship between Interisland Terminal and UH's Department of Art and Art History represented by this exhibition is almost as exciting as the works in the exhibition itself. We are working together to develop a dynamic pipeline of opportunities for young, emerging artists and designers in our community."

Boz Schurr Artist in Residence at HAA

MFA student Boz Schurr is the newest Orvis Artist in Residence at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. Boz started her residency on November 7th and it runs until December 20th. A large scale painting is created every week by Boz and visitors to the Academy.
Here's a fragment of Schurr's project proposal:
" While I am creating a body of work at the Academy I will be recording the process to create a time lapse film.... The film will be a moving "book" in six chapters, one for each week spent in residence, exploring my interactions with visitors, fellow artists, professors, and employers and what I feel I have discovered as a student and artist living in Hawaii.
Also as I am working, I will encourage visitors to my studio to either submit ideas to my story line, watch the film as it has progressed thus far and/or add to the current painting in progress." To read Boz's complete project proposal click here.
So far Boz and HAA visitors have created 3 large scale paintings and there are three chapters of the moving book available to view on her Youtube Channel. You can paint with Boz at HAA Saturday from 1- 4 pm and Sunday from 1 - 4:30 pm.

Student and Alumni work featured at Louis Pohl Gallery

Deck Yer Walls, a group exhibition at Louis Pohl Gallery opened to the public November 24th and will be on display until January 8, 2010.
Among the featured artists are current MFA students Allison Uttley, Roxanne Chasle, and alumni Matthew Kawika Ortiz, Aaron Padilla, and Maika'i Tubbs. Running concurrently with Deck Yer Walls is Fun Fantasy Function featuring the ceramic artwork of alumni Daven Hee and Cory Lum.
Deck Yer Walls and Fun Fantasy Function's opening reception is Thursday December 3 from 5:30 - 9 pm. There will also be a reception December 4th [ First Friday] 5:30- 9 pm. Louis Pohl Gallery is located at 1111 Nuuanu Ave, gallery hours are Tues - Fri 11 am to 5 pm or by appointment.
