John Szostak and the Art Gallery of New South Wales

Faculty member John Szostak recently traveled to Sydney, Australia, where he participated in a symposium on the Japanese artist and modern inheritor of the Rinpa tradition, Kamisaka Sekka (1866-1942). John's paper was entitled "Neo-Rinpa and Other Historical Re-Visions in Contemporary Japanese Art." The paper was based on an essay he contributed to the exhibition currently on display at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. The exhibition is the first in Australia (and in the southern hemisphere) to feature Sekka, an important figure in the history of modern Japanese painting and design.
